S.M.A.R.T. Goals and G.O.D.L.Y. Plans: Setting a Purposeful Foundation for 2025
As we step into a new year, many of us are thinking about our goals and plans for the future. But while the world encourages us to set S.M.A.R.T. goals—those that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—how often do we pause to align our plans with God’s will?
In this week’s sermon, we explored the importance of combining S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting with G.O.D.L.Y. planning. It’s not just about being productive; it’s about being purposeful.
Here’s a breakdown of how we can strive for both practical and spiritual success as we seek to glorify God in everything we do.

The Power of S.M.A.R.T. Goals
S.M.A.R.T. goals are a practical tool that help us stay focused and intentional. They bring clarity to what we want to achieve and make it easier to track our progress.
• Specific: Clear, concise goals leave no room for ambiguity.
• Measurable: Setting milestones ensures you can track success.
• Achievable: Goals should challenge you but remain realistic.
• Relevant: Your goals should align with your priorities.
• Time-bound: Deadlines motivate us to stay consistent.
Using S.M.A.R.T. goals is a wise way to steward your time and resources effectively. However, as Christians, it’s vital that our plans don’t end here.
What Makes a Plan G.O.D.L.Y.?
While S.M.A.R.T. goals focus on the “how” of planning, G.O.D.L.Y. plans focus on the “why” and “who.” These plans center on glorifying God and surrendering to His ultimate purpose for our lives.
A G.O.D.L.Y. plan is:
• God-centered: Does this plan bring glory to God? Does it serve His kingdom?
• Others-focused: Does it bless, help, or serve others in a meaningful way?
• Devotional: Does this plan grow your relationship with God and reflect your faith?
• Lasting: Will it bear eternal fruit or only temporary satisfaction?
• Yielded: Is this plan fully surrendered to God’s will, trusting His timing and outcomes?
By filtering our goals through this G.O.D.L.Y. lens, we move from self-centered ambition to God-centered purpose.
Living Out S.M.A.R.T. Goals and G.O.D.L.Y. Plans
To truly live out both S.M.A.R.T. goals and G.O.D.L.Y. plans, here are three steps to consider:
1. Pray Before You Plan
Before writing your to-do lists or setting your goals, spend time in prayer. Ask God for wisdom and guidance. Commit your plans to Him and trust His leading (Proverbs 16:3).
2. Align with Scripture
Examine your goals against the Word of God. Do your goals reflect His values? Are they in line with His teachings? (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
3. Act in Faith and Surrender
Take practical steps to achieve your goals, but leave room for God to move. Trust His timing and His ways, even if they differ from your plans (Isaiah 55:8-9).
Closing Thoughts
As we move forward into 2025, let’s not just aim for success; let’s aim for significance. By setting S.M.A.R.T. goals and G.O.D.L.Y. plans, we can ensure our work has eternal impact.
Are your goals aligned with God’s purpose for your life? Take time this week to pray, reflect, and commit your plans to Him.
