Validated: A Faith, Authenticated | This is how we know…

Today, we’re diving deep into something that matters to all of us: authenticity. In a world that often values appearance over reality, it’s crucial to ask ourselves—what does it mean to truly live an authentic life, especially as believers?

In our latest sermon series, “Validated: A Faith, Authenticated,” we’re walking through the words of 1st John. It’s a series that not only confronts the misleading whispers of our times but also equips us with the tools to test and confirm the authenticity of our faith.

Last week, Rev. Reggie unpacked the first few verses of 1st John, setting the stage for what it means to live authentically. This week, we tackle 1st John 2:3-14, and it’s all about how our actions reflect our allegiance to God. Pastor John (aka Apostle John) isn’t shy about challenging his listeners, and neither will we shy away from the tough questions he poses.

Authentic Obedience

This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands.” (1 John 2:3)

Straightforward, right? But it hits hard. Authentic faith isn’t just about vocal proclamation; it’s about living it out loud, every day. If our lives contradict the words we shout on Sundays, we need to pause and reflect. Obedience isn’t about legalism or earning God’s love; it’s the natural response of a heart truly touched by grace.

Authentic Love

John doesn’t let up. He switches gears to another tangible indicator of genuine faith: our love for others.

Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.” (1 John 2:9)

It’s simple, yet profound. Our love for each other isn’t optional. It’s a core marker of our walk with Christ. Think about it—how can we claim to walk in His light if we harbor darkness in our hearts towards our brothers and sisters?

Encouragement for the Journey

To wrap up, Pastor John speaks directly to various members of his spiritual family—from little children to fathers to young men—reminding them of their victories and the truths they’ve embraced. This personal touch isn’t just ancient rhetoric; it’s a call for us to recognize the diverse stages of spiritual growth within our own church family.

So, What’s Next?

As we continue this journey through 1st John, I challenge you to reflect on two things:

  1. Your Obedience: Are there areas in your life where your actions don’t line up with His commands?

  2. Your Love: Are there relationships in your life that need the healing touch of genuine, Christ-like love?

Let’s not just nod our heads and agree. Let’s do the work. Dive into the Word, join a small group, engage in community service—do whatever it takes to ensure your faith is not just heard, but seen and felt.

Remember, church isn’t just for Sundays. It’s for every moment of every day. And as your pastor, but more importantly, as your brother in Christ, I’m with you every step of the way.

Walk in joy and authenticity, because the real Jesus is all about real change.
