Step Up – The Call to Lead with a Limp

In last Sunday’s sermon, we continued our Step Up series, focusing on the who and how of godly leadership. This week’s message reminds us that God doesn’t call perfect people into leadership—He calls faithful ones.

Leadership Isn’t About Perfection

In the world, we often think leaders need to have it all together: the perfect image, smooth speech, and all the right answers. But, as we learned, God doesn’t call perfect people because there are none—except for Jesus, of course! Instead, He calls those who meet biblical qualifications rooted in character and faithfulness.

As we reflected on passages like 1 Timothy and Titus, we discovered that leadership qualifications focus on integrity, honesty, and a commitment to living according to the scriptures. These aren’t just about what you say but how you live—leadership starts at home and extends to every part of our lives.

The Danger of Misleading Leadership

The sermon also highlighted the importance of protecting God’s church by placing faithful leaders in positions of influence. Leaders who aren’t grounded in godly character can cause destruction. We’ve all seen how easily churches can fall apart when leaders fall into temptation or act out of self-interest. The enemy’s goal is to manipulate and destroy God’s work, but by holding to God’s standard, we can safeguard the health and strength of the church.

Answering the Call to Leadership

Some of us may feel unworthy or inadequate for leadership because of past mistakes or current struggles. But here’s the good news: God’s call is about progress, not perfection. Like Moses, Peter, and Paul—who all had their weaknesses—God uses people who are willing to be honest about their struggles and lean on His grace. If you’ve been feeling hesitant or afraid, trust that God can work with a limp. We all have something that makes us feel unqualified, but as the sermon emphasized, God is more concerned about our willingness to be used by Him.

If you’re feeling called to leadership, don’t run from it. Whether you’re called to serve as an elder, deacon, deaconess, or simply in a ministry within the church, know that God’s call is for you. He will equip you, walk with you, and strengthen you through every step of the way.
